Classes at Purl Soho! 

We offer classes in knitting, crochet, sewing + patchwork, embroidery, weaving, spinning and needle felting.

Basic Scarf

Beginning Knitting

3 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $150

Learn basic knitting essentials! Skills covered: Cast On, Knit Stitch, Purl Stitch, combining the stitches to create stitch patterns (like Stockinette, Seed, and Rib), Cast Off and Weave in Ends. No prior experience is required. This class will take you from novice to knitter in no time!

Little Fair Isle Hat

Intro to Colorwork

2 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $100

Fair Isle is really one of the most fun things you can do in knitting! Alternate knitting first with one color and then with a second, and watch as the pattern slowly emerges and blossoms into a fascinating and surprising design. Skills covered: Knitting in the Round on Circular and Double Pointed Needles, Chart Reading, Fair Isle Swatch on Circular Needles, Decrease Stitches and a Knitted I-cord.

Mini Socks

Beginning Sock Knitting

3 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $150

Create a pair of adorable little socks to prepare you to take on sock patterns for feet of all sizes. Skills covered: Knitting in the Round on Double Pointed Needles, Short Row Heel Shaping, Picking up Gusset Stitches, Decrease Stitches, and Grafting/Kitchener Stitch.

Prerequisites: Beginning Knitting, Beginning Circular Knitting

Sweater Planning Class

Intro to Top-Down Knitting

3 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $150

Learn the basics of knitting a "top-down" sweater from Kristy McGowan, the author of Modern Top Down Knitting. This invaluable class will teach you how to create a beautiful, seamless sweater that you can try on and adjust as you go for a totally customized fit. This Beginning Sweater Class will set you on the path to designing your own pieces, free to make what you can imagine!

Prerequisites: Must be intermediate knitter and comfortable knitting in the round.

Beginning Crochet

Ribbed Cowl 

2 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $100

Learn the basics of Crochet! Learn this new take on the timeless craft of crochet by making a beautiful Ribbed Cowl. Covered are the basic stitches in Crochet, joining new yarn, finishing, and some tips and tricks. No prior experience needed - the skills learned in this project are easily applied to many varying crochet projects!

Beginning Weaving Class

How to Use a Rigid Heddle Loom

1 Session / 3 Hours, $80

This hands-on class will cover the basics of warping a Rigid Heddle Loom, the process of weaving, and ways to finish your fabric. You will leave with an understanding of how to create a beautiful hand-woven textile and with the confidence to continue to explore the endless art of weaving. No previous experience needed.

  • Practice materials and looms will be provided for use during class.

Custom Monogram Embroidery

Beginning Embroidery

1 Session / 3 Hours , $80

Create a sweet little monogram embroidery piece. Learn how to customize an embroidery pattern and embellish with simple beautiful stitches. Skills covered: How to Transfer Patterns, Surface Filling Stitches, Decorative Line Work Stitches and Tips for Displaying and Finishing your Embroidery Work.

Stitch Dictionary

Comprehensive Introduction to Embroidery

2 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $100

This beginner’s hand embroidery class will get you stitching right away! You’ll create a lovely stitch dictionary that is not only decorative, but also a useful reference for your future embroidery projects. Skills covered: Essential Embroidery Tools and Materials, Basics of Embroidery, and Sample a Variety of Decorative Embroidery Stitches.

Reversible Tote

Beginning Machine Sewing

3 Sessions / 3 Hours each or 4 Sessions / 2.25 Hours each, $225

This class presents an introduction to sewing by machine for the very beginner. Students will make a simple, reversible tote bag with a magnetic snap. Skills covered: Essential Sewing Vocabulary, How to Properly Thread and Sew with the Machine, How to Accurately Measure and Cut Fabric, How to Follow a Simple Pattern, and Fundamental Sewing Skills.

Patchwork Basics - Hand Piecing

1 Session / 4 Hours or 2 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $100

A short and sweet introduction to hand sewing for traditional patchwork quilts in two lessons. Students need no previous hand sewing experience, and will make several quilt blocks in class - the beginnings of a larger quilt or enough to make a small patchwork pillow. Skills covered: Hand Quilting Basics Pattern Drafting, Template Making, and Tips for Sewing Quilt Blocks Together.

Machine Piecing

Patchwork Basics

3 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $150

A workshop for students who want a quick and simple introduction to the essentials of piecing quilt tops by machine. Skills covered: Rotary Cutting, Piecing Squares and Triangles, Combining Pieces into Blocks, Combining Blocks to Make a Larger Quilt Top, and Essential Quilting Vocabulary.  

Prerequisite: Beginning Machine Sewing

Hand Quilting Workshop

1 Session / 4 Hours, $100

A one day, intensive workshop on the basics and finer points of hand quilting. Hand quilting is the method of sewing together the three layers of a quilt (the backing, the batting, and the top) in patterns of hand sewn stitches. Hand quilting holds the three layers of a quilt together, but also adds so much more. Design, texture and dimension are added to the quilt during quilting.

Hand Appliqué

2 Sessions / 2 Hours each, $100

Join us for a two session class and learn the basics of hand appliqué.  Working with a simple flower pattern, students will learn pattern placement techniques and the classic appliqué stitch.  This class is a great introduction to the essentials of appliqué, a versatile technique that can be used to embellish any textile project, from quilts and tote bags to children's clothes.

Required Supplies

*While any fabric can be used for backgrounds, please avoid linen, linen-blends and double-gauze fabrics in your choices for appliqué fabrics. Quilt-weight fabrics are ideal for hand appliqué. 

 

 

Quilt Binding Workshop

 

1 Session / 4 Hours for $100

Learn the essentials for binding a quilt in this one session workshop. There are many different methods for finishing the edges of your quilt, and this workshop will cover several - focusing on the most popular method of attaching separate straight grain and bias strips. Skills covered: Perfectly Mitering Corners, Pinning for Precision, Cutting and Attaching Bias Binding, Top Stitching the Layers.
Prerequisites: Beginning Machine Sewing, Machine Piecing

Required Supplies

  • Craft Size Cotton Quilt Batting (or bring batting scraps at least 8" square - any thickness) If you want to use the finished class pieces as trivets or potholders, choose the thickest loft, Supreme.
  • 2 fat quarters of quilt weight cotton fabric - for samples
  • 1/2 - 3/4 yard each of one or two quilt weight fabrics - for bindings
  • Clover Patchwork Pins
  • 6.5" x 24.5" Creative Grids Ruler
