A Cute Japanese Coin Purse: Attaching the Handle

Coin16

Open up the Inazuma Handle and put glue inside the grooves. Spread the glue around with your Hera Marker so that it's evenly distributed. This is a fairly messy process but the glue cleans up easily and peels right off of the Hera Marker once it's dry.

Now stuff the bag inside the handles using a "poker" (a knitting needle or awl). This it the trickiest part of the whole operation, so be patient. Make sure the pleat is centered on the outside of bag.

Coin19
Add more glue to the inside rim of the handle and stuff the paper string inside the handle groove using your poker.

Coin20

Go all the way around the rim in this way. When you get to the end snip your paper string and stuff the end in.

Now, using a pair of pliers, pinch the rim of the handle tightly all the way around to keep the paper string and fabric in. Don't put the pliers directly on the metal handle, use a piece of scrap cloth in-between as shown above.

Once you've crimped it shut you're all done!  Next time I think I would use a thinner outer fabric since it was pretty hard to stuff everything into the handle. But over all I'm really happy with my little purse!

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've looked longingly at these types of purses and bags in my Japanese craft books and haven't had the gumption to try! Now I just need to figure out how to adjust the pattern to my thrifted handles of different sizes (much cheaper option!).

No kidding? So the purpose of the paper, then, is to keep the pleats in position? Very interesting. Thanks for the translation (Mari) and the tutorial (Molly)!

Cheers,
Liesl

How can something so adorable be so evil. You were right, the stuffing the fabric in the frame is the hardest part. Thanks for the tips and the tutorial, very helpful as I was pulling out my hair!

Thank for post this tutorial. My girl friend has one of japanese coin purse which is almost worn out. I really want to make her one. It's probably cost less if I buy one but I think the thought would make her happy. I can run the sewing-machine so I don't know if hand-stitch would work.

--Have you considered zig-zaggin, serging or hand-whipping the top edge before you do the glue step? Even using a couple rows of straight stitch side-by-side might work. That would hold the edges together tightly so they don't fray and poke out when you push them into the frame and glue. I do this on all my quilts before I do the bias binding, and trim close to the edge. It makes it firm, even, and much easier to work with! I also use a similar trick on scarves or fine fabric that needs to be turned and top-stitched--run a row of straight stitch on the sewing machine all around the edges. Trim closely. Then turn and pin the fabric before you top-stitch or hand whip closed. Happy sewing!

Oop-s I reread that, but I didn't see I'd left the g off zig-zgging until I pushed the submit. Please fix my typo. Thank you. :)
