Materials for Ironing Board Cover

ironing1.jpg

fabric - 2 yards cotton fabric of your choice for a full-size ironing board, or 1 1/2 yards for a small board.  I chose this cherry print from Elsie's Kitchen by Anna Griffin for Windham Fabrics.

batting - I used two layers of twin size mid-loft cotton batting for a firm padding.  You may prefer a high-loft cotton batting.

clear acrylic ruler

pinking shears - These shears have serrated teeth that prevent unravelling.

pattern paper - You can find pattern paper or tracing paper at Purl Patchwork.

bodkin - This helpful tool is used to draw the twine through the narrow hem of the cover. You can also use a safety pin.

glasshead pins

machine thread

marker - I like the Hera Marker because it marks the fabric without ink, similar to the bone folder pictured.

cotton twine or elastic - 3 yards

I just love your site! I stumbled upon it a while back and have been a fan ever since. I gave my ironing board a much needed facelift using this tutorial. Thanks so much for posting it!

I am in the middle of making a cover for mine which is a clip on the wall one. I have cut the batting and the top fabric bigger than the board so I've run into a bit of trouble. Will have to cut it to size first then follow your instructions. The problem is I already have quilted (free hand... impossible to un-pick!) a nice cotton fabric on batting, and also that my batting is not cotton. Will try making a proper one later on... this one will be good experience. Thanks for the help!

This looks interesting. I think I will make one, my board is 18"across the top. I am going to use heating pad fabric (the shiny sliver fabric) for the top. Thanks for the info.

I do not understand your hem instructions. Do you feed the twine through the 1/8" or through the 1/2" ? Is the hem sewn to the cover which you have made fit the top? If so, what will pull around the board to hold it on? The drawing is what confuses me--Sorry.
