A Trip Around the Wool: All Done!

Here is the wrong side of the finished blanket. You can see all the knots and ends but I think it has a certain charm.

And here I am all wrapped up in my creation. It has such a wonderful drape and softness, I wish I could wear it out of the house!

Unfortunately fabrics other than felt will fray. If you used something like cotton you'd need to hem each square before hand sewing them together.Thanks for your comment, and I promise my next blanket project will be made out of cotton!- Molly

my boyfriend uses felt for some pouches he sews. he uses his paper cutter to cut even rectangles of felt. i think that also might work for this project.

is this felt machine washable?

I absolutely love the homespun charm this has. And hand-sewing it makes it perfect for long train rides or a few pieces each morning on my commute (especially if one isn't following a pattern; just take five squares in the morning, put 'em together, and see what you come up with when all the strips are finished).

Would fleece work for this? Fleece can be used unhemmed, right? Or at least, all those tied baby blanket kits would lead you to believe...

This is a wonderful idea! I would also suggest thrift stores as a wool source: find large-sized skirts, wash, and then cut up the skirts for fabric. Then your blanket has a bit of a story behind it, as well.

Am I doing the math right? Does the felted wool for this project actually cost $312? Seems really high but I have never bought this material before.

it's so pretty and looks so fuzzy.. since autumn is coming up I'm considering making it. How long did the hand sewing took you?

and you can wear it outside the house, just make the scarf version of it, with only 1 or 2 rows of squares! still fun and warm!

This took me a few months but I was only sewing it for an hour or two in the evenings (and not every day). A scarf would be much quicker and could be really cute.

Even though this isn't a very quick project it remains one of my favorite things that I've ever made so I really recommend making it!
